2023 Cuvee Nicholas Syrah
The Cuvée Nicholas is a unique blend from three vineyard sites along the coastal ridges of western Mendocino County, within the Mendocino Ridge. We produced our first Cuvée Nicholas 25 years ago, making it the very first Syrah we crafted during the early years of Drew. This cuvee carries special meaning for us, as Nicholas is Molly Drew’s maiden name — a tribute to the guiding force she has always been behind Drew. In crafting this wine, we bring together three elevations, three distinct proximities to the Pacific Ocean, and four soil types shaped by ancient uplifted seafloor soils. Made in the tradition of the great Northern Rhône wines, this layering of esteemed cool-climate Syrah sites results in a seductive, sanguine, and mineral-driven expression of Syrah. The aromatics lead with black olives, black pepper, fennel, iron, and petrichor, while the palate unfolds with notes of blueberry, plum, fennel, iron and a tinge of sea salt.
