In 2020 we selected the West Field Block for our Field Selection bottling. Our intention here is transparency of place and we select the best lots that reflect this intention. In 2020 the West Field block stood out to us in how it captures the essence of this site. The ocean is in view from our West Field Block, planted to Dijon 115 and inter-planted with La Tache and a DRC selection. There's a savory umami character that defines this vineyard and this bottling captures it. The intermixing of the forest and the ocean in the glass. At 3 miles from the Pacific this site is the most westward vineyard in Mendocino County. Our typical cooler temps preserve the essential acidity and allow for more complex flavor development. The wine opens with minerals, petrichor, black chanterelles and spicy plum character. After a few minutes aromas of wet fir tips emerge along with more savory dark red fruits and umami persistence lingering on the palate. We are loving the effortless weight of this Pinot Noir and the mouthwatering acidity that keeps you coming back for more. Be patient with this one, you will want to sit with it and pay attention as its a long slow seduction. Pair with a savory mushroom risotto or pasta with shaved truffles. Cellar for at least a couple years before drinking, preferably longer if you can wait that long or buy more bottles to taste through the years.  A gorgeous wine!
