2006
Pinot Noir, Cargasacchi Jalama Vineyard,
“Potbelly Block” Santa Barbara County
This vineyard site is located outside the Sta. Rita
Hills appellation on the west side, closest to the ocean
than any other in Sta. Rita Hills. This young vineyard
was established in 2000 and the 1.5 acre Potbelly section
was custom planted specifically for Drew. The 06 is
the second, single vineyard Cargasacchi-Jalama Vineyard
for Drew and already has developed an undeniably distinctive
quality.
In my opinion, this is a very well proportioned wine.
The color is a nice dark cherry red reaching to garnet
hues. The nose has a spicy, clean black cherry quality
with a wonderful tight grain oak nuance in the background.
Compared to last year, the wine excels in both depth
and richness. This wine is seductive and elegant in
taste with fresh blackberry, pomegranates and cherry
pie with charm to boot. Excellent!
This is a young wine and the nose is
quite subdued with subtle notes of red cherry, grass
and sanded wood. The lovely red Pinot fruits are accented
with herbal and woodsy flavors. Light in body and offering
some finesse and lively acidity, this is a good food
wine whose flavors trump the aromas at this stage.

2006
Pinot Noir, “Fog Eater”, Anderson Valley
The Fog-Eater designation is our Anderson Valley Appellation
blend made from sites that are heavily influenced by
coastal fog. Each site is chosen for its ability to
add a distinctive layer to the finished wine. The blend
may vary with each passing vintage. I look for components
that will add up to a very interesting and enjoyable
wine. In the 2006 there is evident wild blackberry,
blueberry, earth, game and herbs such as sage and marjoram.
There is enough structural tannins to balance the acidity
and the fruit weight. The intention here is to express
and define Anderson Valley terroir.
The Fog-Eater is a regional ‘Boontling’;
a term used by the early settlers of Anderson Valley.
During this early history these settlers created a regional
dialect that is better known as ‘Boontling’.
The term Fog-Eater means coastal dweller. This fog continues
to be pulled in from the coast cooling these vineyard
sites and encouraging beautiful structure, lively acidity
and pure fruit. Enjoy!
Deep red with magenta hues. Medium-full bodied. Blood
red orange peel, blueberry, blackberry and hints of
cranberry and wild herbs. The fruit is rich and seductive
with blackberry tart, sweet earth and blood red plums;
the tannins are smooth and the acidity lively with a
long finish that concludes and defines this wine.

2006 Pinot Noir,
McDougall Ranch, Sonoma Coast
This is a little seven-acre vineyard located on the
true Sonoma Coast in a highly coveted area known as
the ‘golden triangle’. This vineyard sits
on a small bench at an approximately 1,300 feet elevation
about four miles from the Pacific Ocean on a steep south
slope. On the morning of September 28th, 2006 while
towing my three tons of fruit through a fog dripped
single lane mountain top road, I found myself elated
by the thought of having just harvested superb Sonoma
Coast fruit that tasted like perfect completion, a form
of natural art of the highest degree. It is a joy to
create a wine that straddles richness and elegance.
This vineyard defines the true Sonoma Coast ‘terroir’.
There is a certain refinement in this wine that is
not often seen in today’s market of Pinot Noir.
The nose has bright cherry aromas with earth and spice
undertones. The fruit is focused and delicately sumptuous
with delicious black cherries and sweet rose petals.
The balance of elegant fruit weight and soft structure
leaves the palate refreshed. A superbly elegant wine
from a superb site farmed with great care and passion.
BON APPETIT!
...the pinot lives just above the fog,
where it grew in 2006 to optimal maturity - vibrant
in both color and flavor, dark and savory, with a lift
in the end. The flavor is somewhere between cherry and
pomegranate; the tannins taste salty, with mouthwatering
life. Catch a bottle now with plank-roasted salmon,
or five years from now with roast quail." 95 Points

2006 Pinot Noir, Weir
Vineyard, Yorkville Highlands
This vineyard is situated on the southeastern border
of Anderson Valley in a cool pocket amongst the redwoods.
This stunning vineyard is located on a steep southeastern
slope at an elevation of approximately 850 feet. The
soils consist of a relatively light orange like shale
and clay. The Weir Vineyard is approximately 15 acres
of vineyard planted to some of the more rare Pinot Noir
clone selections seen today in California. The grapes
used from this vineyard in 2006 were carefully chosen.
Two heirloom clones were used; One from a Domain Romanee
Conti selection and one from the Rochioli River Block
selection that was planted for Burt Williams in 1992
that is still used by Williams Selyem winery today.
Bill Weir, the owner is known as somewhat of a Burgundy
fanatic and has strived to produce old world character
in his north coast vineyard. This site brings forth
an elevated fruit quality that is an absolute pleasure
to work with. We look forward to many vintages to come
from this pedigreed site.
Dark, cherry red color. Medium full bodied. Scents
of spice, sweet black cherries and exotic plums with
concentrated floral notes and a nice integration of
oak. The palate is complex and round with delicious
mouth watering cherry fruits and a wonderful acidity
on the finish with varietal undertones of rose petals
with a hint of minerality. ADULTS ONLY PLEASE!
Weir Vineyard is 15 acres which includes
rare DRC and Rochioli selections. Very enviable aromas
of mineral-inflected black cherry fruit, strawberry
and cookie dough. Highly likeable raspberry and strawberry
fruit flavors with a glamorous fruity aftertaste accentuated
with spice and a little white pepper. The fruity finish
sneaks up and expands in the mouth over a minute - very
sexy. The demure presentation of fruit is very attractive.
I like this wine a lot and it is admirable for its perfect
balance and purity. The best from this appellation I
have ever sampled. Hock your kids for this one.
